An eight-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat previously treated for diabetes mellitus (diagnosed by repeated hyperglycemia and glucosuria) is presented for a routine check-up. The owner discontinued insulin two months ago, but is still feeding the prescription diabetic diet since the cat has a good appetite for it.

Physical exam reveals no significant abnormalities.

Blood chemistry results show fasting normoglycemia; urinalysis shows urine specific gravity 1.045, glucose negative, pH=7.0.

What is the most likely explanation of these results?
